In yesterday's blogpost, I gave my friend Horatio detailed instructions on how to make the frame for the Valentine. We took a little break because it is a bit hard on the eyes. Today, I will show her how to make the holes. Below is a diagram of where the holes go in the picture frame. There are 15 holes per side, 7 down the middle, and ten for the V.
Study it carefully for there will be a quiz afterward.
JUST KIDDING! The diagram gives you a picture of where the holes will go.

First, we make 15 points along each edge, spaced about ¹⁄₈″ apart. Lightly in pencil. That's a total of 60 holes.
We work on a cutting board, so we don't mark the kitchen table. I find a push pin a good tool for this work, but you may try a needle, tack, or something with a sharp point.
I push the pin through the flap all the way to the cutting board. Check out the last picture in this post to see the holes on the flip side.

Next, we work on the points in the middle of the heart. We line the ruler at the mid point of the top and bottom edge. Where's the top and bottom? Take your pick.
The mid point of each edge is the eighth point, which falls exactly in the middle of 15 points.
Again, we mark points in pencil, lightly, spaced about ¹⁄₈″ apart. We make 7 points down the middle and then prick them with a push pin.

The final step is the make the V that forms the lower half of the heart. We put the ruler at a 45º angle aligned to the mid point of the bottom and the mid point of the left edge as shown below. The mid point of each edge is the 8th point. We make five points on this side, lightly in pencil, spaced about 1/4″ apart. You may notice that these points are spaced further apart.
Then, we rotate the ruler to make the points on the other side. Hopefully, the diagram at the beginning of the post will make it look clear.

We finish making our last hole and admire both sides of the valentine. Drawing and pricking 77 holes is hard on the eyes. We take a break to do something completely auditory: listening to Mozart's piano concerto number 23 (K. 488).
