I love getting feedback! Friends have asked for a “how to" lesson for curve stitching. Today, we're going to draw two parabolas. A parabola is the curve that looks like a skateboard ramp. Two of them drawn into a square looks a bit like a cat's eye.
Today, Pamela tried her first pattern and did really well. At first, I carefully guided her. She drew the last five lines without my help. Since she has fine motor delays, I was as pleased with her efforts as was she. She loves doodling, and I can imagine her filling a notebook full of them.

You'll need a print of the pdf below, a pencil, and a transparent ruler.

Before thinking about how to show your kids, relax and try it on your own. Once you understand how, you can sit by the side of your students and show them. The first step is to place the ruler along the points on the bottom of the square. Keep the ruler firmly in place an draw a line through all sixteen points.
To draw the second line, you need to have the ruler pass through two points. One is on the bottom, and the other is on the right edge. Place the ruler on the second point from the left on the bottom and the second point from the bottom on the right edge. The ruler should form a narrow angle with the bottom.
To draw the third line, pass the ruler through the third point from the left edge and the third point up from the bottom. You end up shifting the ruler right one point and up point with each new long. The ruler's angle with the bottom of the square grows larger each time.
By now, you should see the pattern of how the ruler shifts one point right and one point up for each line. You slightly rotate the ruler, and the angle increases.
